Ring in the New Year with a Happy and Healthy Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a region of the body comprised of muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, joints, fascia, nerves, blood vessels, visceral organs and skin. It is located at the bottom of the torso and acts as a sling or hammock to support the organs and physiological function of the organs held within this region, including bowel, bladder and genitals.

To have a properly balanced and functional pelvic floor, there must be adequate strength, movement, and pressure management. Muscles, internally and externally, can become tight or weak through posture, position, childbirth, trauma and overuse, and the resulting misalignment can impact proper functioning. When functioning is not optimal, low back pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, overactive bladder, constipation, sexual and other problems may result.

Because the pelvic floor is comprised of muscles, tissue, bone, fascia, and is an area that moves, physical therapy may seem to be the primary option for care. Yet, a combination of physical and craniosacral therapies is often beneficial. CranioSacral Therapy helps the body to release somatoemotional experiences that may be limiting progress or causing an individual to be stuck in a pain cycle. This combined therapeutic approach assesses the entire person along with the pelvic floor to create an individualized plan of care designed to decrease symptoms and improve quality of life for those suffering from pelvic pain. The resulting balance works to restore the health of this region as well as a person’s physical and emotional well-being.
