How Gum Disease Affects Men’s Health

It’s difficult to imagine that one part of the body can affect another so adversely or indicate possible medical issues. Numerous studies have shown a direct correlation between gum disease and a myriad of illnesses, including certain cancers. Dental health, including regular exams, is therefore critical for your overall well-being.

Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer death as it is usually diagnosed at a late stage due to its vague symptoms. Scientists have been searching tirelessly for ways to catch it earlier and increase survival rates. Researchers at Brown University and Harvard found that periodontal disease, especially in men, increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer by a whopping 63%. They believe that the inflammation that gum disease creates is a key risk factor for developing cancer. As up to 80% of the population are currently suffering from some form of gum disease, this is a very alarming statistic.

Other studies have shown that the systemic inflammation caused by periodontal disease is also considered a risk factor for erectile dysfunction (ED). Turkish researchers theorize that men with ED are three times more likely to have gum disease than men who do not because chronic periodontal disease can affect vascular health, which is a common cause of ED. Although researchers are suggesting they conduct more studies, most scientists are convinced there is enough evidence to suggest that gum disease is a significant risk factor for a variety of diseases.

How can men prevent these serious and potentially life-threatening issues? Dr. Gashinsky, of the Holistic Dental Center in Millburn, explains, “I find that men who have regular dental screenings have a higher level of health without the need to fix problems.” He adds, “Who would think a simple visit to your dentist could actually reduce your risk for disease?” Regular dental checkups and periodontal screenings not only greatly reduce a man’s risk for tooth decay and tooth loss, but they may also ultimately save his life.
