In this spirit, Brookside Community Church and the Center for Spiritual Living Morristown are collaborating to once again offer a day-long event exploring holistic wellness.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on September 30 at 8 E. Main St in Brookside. Last year’s event featured workshops and presentations on a variety of topics plus vendors and nonprofits that offered holistic health related goods for sale, information on local programming and an area specifically for children. This year promises to be even better as we connect with the wider community, deepen relationships, and support healthy living.

Rev. Frankie Timmers, spiritual director of Center for Spiritual Living Morristown, shares, “We welcome all those interested in healthy living to become a sponsor and/or vendor for this year’s event. Sponsors may contribute financially or by contributing to our Silent Auction. As a vendor, you may host a table to educate community members about how your organization supports wellness, and sell goods related to holistic health. In appreciation for being a part of the event, we will raise awareness of you or your organization by thanking you publicly in our electronic advertising and printed program.”

Location: 8 E. This comprehensive 6-month program begins on June 17, and prepares students to assist people as a healing and teaching presence and facilitator. Many students have already completed Reiki 1 & 2, and some have master certificates though the number one prerequisite is a desire for full Reiki training and true mastery. StraightArrow, who became a Reiki master in 1996, loves teaching and sees it as a significant purpose in her work and life. Mentoring students along the way is an important part of the training she offers.

The coursework includes instruction on medical intuition, advanced energy studies from many traditions, work with animals, land, and buildings, ethics, and so much more. Upon graduation, students will be confident in their abilities and ready to live and share Reiki personally and professionally, both in person and at a distance. “To be a master, we walk in wisdom, grace, and health on all levels. We continually heal ourselves as we learn to help others,” states StraightArrow.

For information, contact Janet at Janet@Bethemedicine.com, 973-647-2500 or BeTheMedicine.com/Events.

Original article published at Natural Awakenings North Central New Jersey
urn:uuid:907a5a99-5e20-479a-960e-3c3b6651b69c2023-04-03T17:17:22-07:002023-04-03T17:17:22-07:00Past Life Awareness and More Can Help Heal Today2023-04-03 17:17:21 -0700Kristy Mayer
Howard G. David Boguslavsky, MD, and his talented team intentionally bring this leading-edge paradigm to both of his practices, PremierMD, and Premier Medical Acupuncture, which allows Dr. Boguslavsky to incorporate the benefits of Eastern and Western medicine, ensuring a rich array of credible solutions to widely varying patient needs.

PremierMD is best described as a technologically advanced, efficient, modern medical practice built upon a time-honored tradition of compassionate attention to each individual patient and their unique condition. It is primarily defined by its holistic approach, a term characterized by the belief that the parts of something are interconnected and can be explained only by reference to the whole. From a medical standpoint, holistic care refers to the treatment of the entire person, considering physical, mental, emotional, and social factors. This deeply integrated healing model is based on discovering and addressing the underlying causes of illness, as opposed to merely treating symptoms.

Given our profound bio individuality, Dr. Boguslavsky finds that being Board Certified in both Family Medicine and Medical Acupuncture offers great latitude in providing care. This foundation enables him to utilize evidence-based medicine from around the globe to ensure patients are provided with a full spectrum of treatment options for their varying needs. In some cases, Western medicine offers the most useful treatment, whereas for others, a few well-targeted acupuncture sessions can accomplish more than months of physical therapy or drugs.

Other patients find that medical cannabis is most effective for their issues, such as chronic pain or nagging insomnia. Cannabis contains cannabinoids, a group of closely related compounds which interact with our biologically innate endocannabinoid system. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoid-like molecules produced in our bodies and stored in our brains, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells which act as a bridge between body and mind, with complex actions in our immune system, nervous system, and bodily organs. In other words, cannabis may help connect brain activity and states of physical health and disease. This mind-body medicine is available to patients qualifying under the NJ Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana statutes.

Dr. Boguslavsky has also seen promising results with various pharmaceutical medications, one case in point being Spravato, a ketamine-based treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). John Krystal, MD, chief psychiatrist at Yale Medicine and one of the pioneers of ketamine research in the country, refers to ketamine as “the anti-medication” medication for treatment-resistant depression.

Krystal notes that, “With most medications, like valium, the anti-anxiety effect only lasts when it is in your system. When the valium goes away, you can get rebound anxiety. When you take ketamine, it triggers reactions in your cortex that enable brain connections to regrow. It’s the reaction to ketamine, not the presence of ketamine in the body that constitutes its effects.” Currently, PremierMD is the only Spravato treatment center in Central New Jersey.

For many loyal patients, the culture of caring that characterizes PremierMD is as healing as the evidence-based treatment options on offer. As Dr. Boguslavsky has noted, “We never run short on time or compassion.” Imagine a scenario in which every patient receives all the time needed for a full therapeutic evaluation and intervention. No matter your age, state of health, or specific condition, PremierMD offers a sanctuary for superb patient-centered family medicine and medical acupuncture. Here’s to living not only long, but also well!

PremierMD is located at 757 Route 202-206, Ste. 104 in Bridgewater. What a clever concept, I thought, to focus on the internal body versus the exterior alignment of limbs. It is easy to lose sight of why we practice the physical aspects of yoga. We enter a class and go into autopilot or competitive mode by perhaps challenging our physical body to contort into postures that are uncomfortable versus listening to our subtle mind. At times, this mindset is okay, however, the real yoga happens internally and quite honestly has very little to do with the physical asana. Asana is meant to open channels of thought or energy to then dive deeper into answering the on-going question of “why”.

Internal alignment encourages us to seek answers regarding our mind/body connection—without internal peace it will be impossible to achieve external peace. When led by a skilled instructor, a yogi will be challenged to dive into consciousness and observe patterns of behavior, repetitive thoughts, relationship with ego and acknowledgement of past samskaras (traumas).

It is human nature to seek happiness in life. I cannot imagine anyone who would argue otherwise. However, happiness and finding the joys of this emotion takes effort and at times riding through mental pain to ultimately reach samadhi (total self-collectedness). When we find ourselves in a position of the observer of thoughts or actions, also known as the witness self, we can find the answers to many of life’s questions. It is my belief that our purpose in life is to clear our karma and learn the lessons we were brought onto the earth to do. This is only possible when we are open and vulnerable to experiencing uncomfortable moments and being honest with what we can change in our own lives to find true happiness.

Internal alignment allows us to reach bliss or ananda because we are aligning our thoughts, actions, and emotions with the physical experience in the body. Energy will be free-flowing and the nadis (rivers of “energy” in the body) are clear and open to receive. The true challenge of “yoga” is to address what may be holding us back from experiencing internal peace and actively change those patterns in the spirit of finding internal alignment.

The next time you step onto your yoga mat, I wish is that you close your eyes, breathe deeply, and find the space in your mind to experience the physical aspects of yoga while connecting with your subtle internal body. Your physical practice will elevate and most importantly, your mind-body connection will enable you to release what no longer serves and create space for what does.

Nicole Zornitzer, ERYT 1000, yoga therapist, founder of Niyama Yoga & Wellness Shala, located in Randolph, New Jersey; Upper Lake Mohawk in Sparta, New Jersey; Roseland, New Jersey; and Delray Beach in Florida. NiyamaYogaShala.com.

I was inspired to evaluate my life, create future goals, and make changes to patterns that were no longer serving. In a yoga practice, we are encouraged to let go, to surrender, to remove obstacles, to live life fully. As my year of intention draws to a close, I can share that doing so can create a life that is rich in happiness.

When we step aside from our ego and reflect upon our lives with honesty and an ability to become vulnerable, the answers will be transparent. This does not assume that the road will be easy, in fact creating change and embracing the now is not an easy feat. A commitment to this art of living in the moment takes personal sadhana, courage, dedication, and an unbreakable desire to put the pieces of life together in a shape that our heart strings are subtly guiding us to follow.

Experiencing life fully each day was challenging at times, catching myself worried or anxious about an unknown future was not in my wheelhouse. I am a planner, a pitta dosha, a type A personality and having “no plan” was scary, yet exciting. For 12 months, I traveled, I absorbed other cultures, I made new friends, I broadened my reach in business, I took risks, and I dedicated my efforts to self-care while listening closely to my spirit guides and the path they were encouraging me to take. It is an old cliché, but I did follow the road less traveled, and it was glorious.

For many years, I perceived my heart as broken and in disrepair. I began to believe that the traumas of life had created a pattern that would be impossible for me to mend. As a healer, a human, and a committed yogi, I acknowledged that the intention I had created would require a shift in mindset for me to live the life I deserve, the life I wanted. I knew that if I put myself to this test that I, in turn, would be able to encourage my clients to experience the same. In my opinion, when living an authentic yogic and ayurvedic lifestyle, it is important to experience matters firsthand to then help others properly. This concept relates to prana vidya, the expansion of consciousness and awakening of prana (energy), that eventually leads to contentment and union of mind/body/spirit. I realized that my body and mind were disconnected in many ways and I needed to create a fluid flow of my internal energy in tandem with my physical body.

Through my journey, my travels, my practice, my following of the intangible messages I was receiving, I found myself. I have become closer to experiencing ananda (bliss), I have learned to let go and surrender and at times proceed without a clear plan. When we look too far ahead, we will miss the present moment. We will lose ourselves.

What I can share with you, as this year concludes, is that I am happy. I accomplished my goal; I stayed intention focused and I have never been clearer. I have allowed many new souls to touch my heart. I have shared space with hundreds of beautiful people. I have let go of past beliefs that were holding me back and acknowledged that my future is what I manifest. I have learned to truly love myself and have allowed myself to receive new loves. Most importantly, I have realized the importance of living in the present moment. As I enter 2023, I am optimistic and excited for what is to come. I have no idea where I will be in six months and that is now exciting versus intimidating because I realize that I will never fail. I will simply fall into the arms of love and feel fully embraced.

This message has become paramount in my yoga offerings and the ability to hold space for others as they journey through difficulty. In a recent conversation with one of my colleagues, we discussed the importance of providing a safe place for our fellow practitioners to evolve and share their struggles both on and off the yoga mat.

One of the primary offerings we teach on the mat is the idea of encouraging the evolution of self through movement, breathing techniques and mindful engagement in life. This process is not easy and it is not meant to be. We have all heard the saying that anything worth having should not come easy. When we put effort into resolving past traumas, patterns of behavior that may not be serving us any longer or aspirations for a different future, we are faced with the difficulty of seeing with our reality with eyes wide open. This reality, while at moments may not be ideal, is one of importance to enable us to best map our path for the future.

There are different methods to encourage release of samskaras (past wounds). One of the more common is through the physical aspect of yoga asana. By moving the body in tandem with pranayama (breathwork) we are moving energy through the physical body and thereby creating a channel to essentially release unwanted energy. This energy could be emotional baggage, physical trauma or spiritual disconnection. Another method to find balance is meditation. Finding this quieting of the mind and steadiness of breath creates an environment of peace and tranquility which thereby enhances our ability to connect with ourselves and others. One modality that has dramatically changed my private practice is the art of sound healing which uses sacred instruments to move energy through the body. This form of healing locates areas within the body that are either lacking in prana or perhaps overwhelmed with prana. As a sound therapist, it is then my mission to effectively and respectfully shift this energy in the physical body and ultimately create change in the emotional, spiritual and energetic body.

When we allow ourselves to let go of the need to hold onto patterns of the past, we gradually begin to release the tight hold we have on past beliefs of ourselves or our life’s purpose. We are then gifted with the opportunity of a lifetime, happiness and true connection. Life is about growth. When the subtle aspects of the mind prevent such growth, the creation of disconnection with our purpose on this earth ensues.

The risk to step out of our “bud” and blossom into a beautiful flower reminds me of the lotus flower that is birthed out of the mud. It is through the muck of life that we find our dharma, our purpose, our passion, and our innate ability to enjoy life as it was meant to be experienced.

The method of healing can vary from physical yoga asana to meditation to sound healing to reiki or Ayurvedic medicine. The tools I share have come through formal education, self-study and my commitment to the practice of Therapeutic Yoga.

Many years ago, I was introduced to the works of Stephen Levine, an acclaimed author, poet and teacher best known for his work on death and dying. He introduced the teachings of Theravada Buddhism to the West and made these learnings more tangible to his followers. His book, “A Year to Live” focused on finding the moments in each day to be appreciative and grateful for the one life we are given. I first read this at a time in my life that seemed hopeless, when I was grasping to find meaning to all the tragedy I had endured over the course of my life. I have since recommended it countless times to those seeking inspiration and guidance on living in the now. I read my second Levine book “Healing Into Life and Death” during my own RYT 300 Hour Teacher Training 13 years ago, and again about one month ago while preparing for my next incoming group of students to train with me for their Advanced Therapeutic Yoga Degree. It felt as if it had been waiting all these years for me to find it for the second time.

When I opened my dusty book from 13 years ago, I felt as if I was opening a treasure box. I felt connected to the smell, the texture, the weight of the book. I brought this book on a backpacking trip and read it under a full moon in a tent with a headlamp attached to my body. I felt a connection that I don’t often feel with a tangible item, let alone a human being. I sensed that there was a spiritual evolution happening during these moments and my yogic mind instructed me to just go along for the ride.

That first night, in the moonlight, I got as far as page 13. And this is what I read:

“There are many ways this work can be used. It can be read like a book, not unlike passively sitting on a riverbank listening to the rippling waters, or one can go swimming in it, actively participating in it as a healing process. Indeed, there is a story about an intellectual youth who felt he could learn everything from books. He read about the stars and became an astronomer, he read about history and became a historian, he read about swimming and drowned. Some things we can only learn by wading in slowly, from the direct experience of the ocean of being lapping against our body. To enter this process directly is to participate in the healing we took birth for, is to become fully alive.

The secret of healing is there’s no secret at all. Healing is an open book. You are not on page 13.”

This introduction affected me on a visceral level. I could feel my veins pulsating, I could sense the energy shifting in my body, I could smell the scent of hope in my future. I realized in that very moment, that I have wasted many years of my life living for tomorrow instead of today, creating story lines that never came to fruition, placing expectations on others that were unrealistic and most importantly avoiding my own internal healing process and tending to my own heart. Along this journey of helping others, I forgot about the most important person of all, me.

To heal is a journey and to find the courage to heal has been the most challenging aspect of healing for me. Healing into death, bequests us all to heal into life. At the moment of death, we should all be able to reflect upon this life, and all it has brought us with sincere gratitude. As I heal my own heart, I realize that my vulnerability will help others do the same. We are all humans, just being and I suspect we all are trying our best.

As I learn to wade slowly in this ocean of life, I am equally naïve, yet incredibly optimistic that given the right intentions, I will experience a moment during this lifetime that I will sit in a comfortable chair, gazing at an ocean surrounded by mountains. I will feel a love that overtakes my being, I will be held by those that I have given my life’s efforts to, I will take a deep breath in followed by a glorious exhale, knowing all is well.

I pondered on this thought for the remainder of my journey.

What if we all could find moments in our day, our month, our year to experience The Less Stressway. What if we had the knowledge that life is too short to worry all the time? What if we created happiness in the smallest of moments and contentment in the mundane?

I write this article with the candid knowledge that I am still also learning to let go, learning to appreciate the small moments, learning to decrease the creeping sense of anxiety or stress. I am no different than probably most of you who are continually bombarded with social media, financial stress, insecurity, relationship challenges, overwhelming responsibilities and moments of dismay.

This idea led me to again think about how my journey on the yoga mat has provided me an outlet for releasing unnecessary negative energy as well as a source of strength. The lessons we learn from a seasoned yoga professional are deep. Yoga is not about the pose. It’s not about the temperature in the room. It’s not about flexibility and it most certainly is not about going into difficult inversions. Yoga is about finding our internal source of strength and confidence when the waters appear too deep. Yoga is about finding a paddle in rough seas and learning how to process information with a clear mind that is not muddled by the continual misinformation about what is and what isn’t. Yoga is finding the ability to separate reality from what the ego at times is telling us.

When we find the ability to illuminate our power on a yoga mat, we find ourselves balanced and happy in this moment versus seeking something that is unrealistic or intangible. When we practice the art of asana or yoga postures on the mat, becoming acutely in tune with what our body needs in that moment instead of what we think we “should” be doing, we achieve a moment of annandamayakosha, also known as bliss body.

My own journey of illuminating on the mat has been interesting and forever changing. The body ages, the mind matures and desires change. The one constant, however, is showing up and accepting exactly where I am without judgement.

When we release judgement regarding the unknown, we do find The Less Stressway. There is one fact that I am certain about and that is that stress will lead to dis-ease; therefore, it is essential that we, as a society, find the tools and mechanisms to find our own path to wellness and ease.

As I drove down that highway, I realized my destination—enjoying The Less Stressway and embracing the now.

Commercial air fresheners are certainly a common fixture in many homes, schools and businesses. But are they as safe and beneficial as people often think they are?

The assumed purpose of these products is to “freshen” the air, however, most merely mask odors with chemicals that degrade the air quality in our homes. In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), mass-market air fresheners are a major source of indoor air pollution. They often contain unhealthy chemicals such as formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, aerosol propellants, acetaldehyde—a likely human carcinogen according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)—and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), among others.

VOCs, which are emitted as gases, are a family of chemicals, some of which may cause adverse health effects. According to the EPA, concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors—up to ten times higher, in fact—than outdoors, and can be harmful to people of all ages, as well as pets, potentially causing:

Eye, nose and throat irritation

Headaches, loss of coordination and nausea

Damage to liver, kidneys and the central nervous system

Cancer in animals; some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans

Another chemical group to be aware of is phthalates, which have been linked to hormonal and reproductive problems, birth defects and developmental disorders. A 2007 review by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found that 12 out of 14 popular air fresheners contained phthalates.

Labels don’t reveal this since air freshener ingredients can legally be kept secret due to business protections on product ingredients and fragrance formulations. Given these loopholes for manufacturers, less than ten percent of all volatile ingredients are typically disclosed on air freshener labels or material safety data sheets.

So how can we create a clean-smelling home if we prefer to steer clear of these chemical-based products? Worry not, it is easy to freshen air naturally with a few simple strategies. For example:

Attack Odors at the Source

Many odors are a snap to clear up naturally. It may be as simple as refreshing the litter box, ferreting out spoiled leftovers from the fridge, taking out the garbage more often, keeping an open box of baking soda in the fridge or sprinkling it into indoor trash cans and compost bins. Of course, keeping windows at least partially open year around is an easy, free air freshener. For a natural, do-it-yourself option, make simple garbage pail pods using essential oils.

Make Your Own Natural Air Freshener

This solution is easy, inexpensive and fun. Simply fill a spray bottle with purified water and add a few drops of essential oil. That’s it. A good essential oil starter kit might include soothing lavender, disinfecting tea tree, freshening lemon, cooling peppermint and invigorating grapefruit oils, though there are many to choose from. Experiment with the combinations. Mist rooms as often as you like and enjoy.

Enjoy Natural Scented Candles

Candles create a lovely aesthetic in our homes and scented versions lend a nice aroma to interior spaces. The key is selecting healthy alternatives. Most commercial candles are made from paraffin wax, which may create highly toxic benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, chlorobenzene, ethylbenzene, and other chemicals when burned, and the wicks often contain heavy metals such as lead which is released into the indoor atmosphere as well. Synthetic fragrances add insult to injury by off-gassing chemicals like phthalates as well.

Look for safe, beneficial candles made from non-GMO soy or beeswax in natural markets and online. Be aware that the term “fragrance” is code for chemical additives so be sure to select candles scented with only natural essential oils.

Buy Healthy Alternatives

Safe, natural air fresheners are available. A simple citrus spray that contains only natural citrus oils from a blend of oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines and grapefruits is a great choice. Essential oil diffusers are wonderful and come in a variety of designs. For an exceptional version, consider a cool bamboo diffuser. This type uses high-frequency ultrasonic electrical vibrations to create an ultra-fine mist. This diffusion method doesn’t utilize heat, so essential oil integrity and holistic properties are maintained.

With so many great options, creating a fresh-scented home, free of undesirable chemicals, will be as easy as it is healthy!

Kiki Powers, MS, CNC, is a contributing writer for Natural Awakenings, a professional health writer, blogger, and national speaker specializing in plant-based nutrition and healthy green living.
