Pruning the “SHOULDS” of Life

When first designing a home garden, it’s important to carve out permanent areas for vegetables that will feed us year around. What is seldom considered is the expanding growth of nearby trees that, with each passing year, grow to encircle the area and encroach on the garden space, blocking the sun and hindering the growth of our nourishing plants.

Cutting down a perfectly good tree can seem almost immoral and many of us would move the garden before eliminating the tree. Year after year, we chase the sun to make new beds until one day, there is no place left to plant that isn’t in shade. Something must be done to let in the light.

The most beautiful trees often provide the most shade, and their beauty brings many compliments, and even envy from those who are part of our lives. To protect the greater growth, it becomes necessary to remove the tree, yet we know people will think we are crazy to remove a gorgeous, healthy tree. The inner message moves from “I need to remove what’s blocking the light” to “I should not cut down the tree because other people think it’s beautiful, despite the problems it’s creating for my garden.” Our action is now being blocked by a “should.”

From the outside, a life built on “should” may look nice, but for the person living that life, these “shoulds” may be blocking the sun of their being. We feel as though we have to keep our “shoulds,” even though the shade it casts has stunted our inspiration, creativity and growth.

What blocks out the sun of our spirit? Some “shoulds” were handed down when we were too young to know better. For example, doubting our abilities and talents because parents dictated a path we should take. Some “shoulds” come from the conventions of society. Whatever holds us hostage energetically and emotionally limits our possibilities and constrict our inner light.

Pruning unnecessary “shoulds” from one’s life offers new beginnings as restrictions fall away. As these “shoulds” are removed, life may look strange. Others may judge or criticize. But removing these barriers is a step toward personal freedom and happiness, allowing for a more authentic life. The sun that shines through makes all difference.

5 Top Tips to Finding Your Next Doctor

1 Keep an Open Mind! Healthcare has come a long way. Today, you have access to practitioners that branch outside of traditional medicine and aim to identify the root causes of conditions while using alternative treatments that may help you get the relief you need. Just because it’s not a pill, doesn’t make it pseudoscience.

2 Build Your Health Care Team. There is no one doctor that can be the be-all-end-all for your health needs. Be sure to have a team of practitioners with different “lenses” and areas of expertise who will treat the root cause and not just the symptom(s).

3   Environment Influences Healing. Health is multi-factorial. Your mental and emotional environment plays a pivotal role in your healing potential. Your doctors and their staff should create an office atmosphere filled with positivity so you can get the most out of your care.

4 Your Story Matters.  Before you begin any treatment, be sure to have a comprehensive consultation to discuss your health concerns. Find practitioners who welcome questions and will take the time to listen and treat you with respect.

5 Report of Findings. When it comes to our health, we often make decisions without understanding the risk versus benefits. Knowledge is an important part of the healing process and is essential to make conscious, informed health decisions. Find practitioners who take the time to explain their exam findings and the recommendations for treatment in ways that make sense to you.
